about

"they did not tell me it would hurt like this
no one warned me
about the heartbreak we experience with friends
where are the albums i thought
i could not find the ballads
or read the books dedicated to writing the grief
we fall into when friends leave
it is the type of heartache that
does not hit you like a tsunami
it is a slow cancer
the kind that does not show up for months
has not visible signs
is an ache here
a headache there
but manageable
cancer or tsunami
it all ends the same
a friend or a lover
a loss is a loss is a loss"
— the underrated heartache, by Rupi Kauer

BFF is a folk-inflected indie rock opus about rebuilding after friend-breakups and loss in the uncertain digital age. In a captivating, catchy, and cathartic tour, I examine the role of 'best friend' that we take on or is thrust upon us. I call attention to the heartbreak that is ending friendships, that is so rarely seen in pop culture, while focusing on my personal experiences navigating it all as a millennial American artist. We start with “Check In”, a letter to my departed dad. Songs like "Spend the Night" and "Read to Me" offer an intimate and hopeful look at love, while songs like "This is Fine", "The Doom", and "Pocket Light" have ultra-relevant themes of living in a constant state of new, horrible news. Other tracks include,"Kitty", a gleeful surf-rock style song about street harassment and rape culture, and "Somebody Song" a vulnerable examination of my own body dysmorphia + a wish for self love. "Lose a Friend" and "Best Friend" are two sides of a breakup, that fear when you see it coming, that confusion and rage as love turns to resentment and the familiar becomes unrecognizable.

Compared to Angel Olsen, Dirty Projectors, Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats, The Cranberries, Liz Phair, Joni Mitchell, The Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian, Throwing Muses.
